A Hearty Toast to the GUBNA

If you’re into big, hoppy, juicy beers, you may be familiar with GUBNA Imperial IPA. GUBNA reinvents itself once a year for a seasonal release, based on an annual hop selection led by our employees. In honor of this year’s release, we’d like to tell you a little bit about this batch of GUBNA; but we’d also like to introduce you to GUBNA THE PERSON – yes, he’s an actual living person. Read on.

This year, GUBNA (the beer) rules from atop a pedestal of spicy, herbal Crystal hops; juicy, fruity Eldorado; and tropical, tangerine-esque Azacca, hand-picked by over 60 of our employees at this year’s hop selection. It’s hopped four times – in the mash addition, wort addition, and twice kettle dry-hopped with an almost obnoxious 6.7% hop load (that means it’s 50% more hoptuous than the most hopmonious previous incarnation of GUBNA). That noble hop lineup is set against a spicy, viscous and downright regal 15% Rye Malt backbone. It’s inexplicably quaffable at 10% ABV.

Clearly, we could talk about GUBNA all day – it’s one of our favorite brews. But don’t take just our word for it; past versions of GUBNA have been reviewed thousands of times by craft beer drinkers on sites like BeerAdvocate and RateBeer. Here are some highlights:

Dr_Bahmbay13 got pretty pumped about the 2015 GUBNA, “…super dank nasty Gubna is yah hook up!holla! If ya hear me!Gubna is your big bad booty daddy of Imperial IPA’s.Genetic freak!”

In 2016, madchemist23 presumably awoke to a half-finished note on his account, “Massive citrus and pine in aroma. Copper with white head. Definetly a good beer since I don’t remember typing this.”

Also in 2016, a bit more buttoned-up review from beermeplz, “a little boozy but this one is worth sipping. Great stuff.”

With some imagination, any of the above reviews could probably be applied to Gubna the dude, who has been with OBB from the start and currently works for Hotbox Roasters, the coffee company related to the brewery. We asked around the office about the Gubna, and more than one person said some version of, “Stories about the Gubna? I got stories, but they’re probably not appropriate.” We suspect that some of those memories are boozy, fun, and a little bit hazy – just like GUBNA the beer. Regardless of his level of propriety, people around here think he’s pretty rad. In fact, he’s credited with helping to build Oskar Blues from the very first can and the first tap handle.

“At first, he got laughed out, and physically thrown out, of accounts because he was pitching a craft beer in a can,” said marketing dude Chad Melis. “Gubna kept showing up, changing minds, living and breathing OB with a big badass smile and a ton of good times for people who were willing to give craft beer in a can a shot.”

The Gubna’s long-time coworker/buddy, Geoff Hess explains the nickname, “From his humble beginnings in Huntsville, AL, his nickname ‘The Gubna’ (Gubna for short) is derived from the southern slang version of ‘the Governor.’” Geoff goes on to say, “His character is true to the beer that was named in his honor- Gubna Imperial IPA is a big, bold flavor grenade that defies convention. It has always challenged the nay-sayers that claim that great, complex, flavorful beers can’t hold court in a can. Gubna is still way before its time. Like the Gubna, it’s been there done that, over and over again, consistently. Pull the pin and toast THE Gubna, with a GUBNA!”

And a review from our Sales Analyst Jennifer Connolley: “I would give Gubna the person 10 out of 5 stars.  Enthusiastic, get er done-type, motivator and cheerleader.”

There you have it. Stop by one of our Tasty Weasel Taprooms and try the 2018 GUBNA Imperial IPA – a big, bold beer inspired by a big, bold personality. Release parties will take place March 16 in Longmont, Boulder, Austin, and Brevard. We’ll be pouring that hoppier-than-ever GUBNA, giving away free sh*t, and generally enjoying ourselves, and we’d like you to be there too.
