Hey all! What a great weekend that was! With all this great patio weather, I couldn’t help but notice that we blew through our stock of Kill Your Idles: Spring Flowers and the last kegs of P-Funk. With that it mind, our production team got into hustle mode and cranked out a fresh batch of a tart and fruity Kill Your Idles; this time featuring plum and apricot puree! Please allow me to share my thoughts on Kill Your Idles: Pluot.
Much like I’ve explained before on the origins of our Kill Your Idles base beer, we go through the process of kettle souring the wort and then adding lactose to the kettle to create a sweet and tart foundation to pile fruit upon (and sometimes other flavors, like with Spring Flowers and some other future experiments we have up our sleeves). Not so much with the goal of creating an assertive sour ale but one with added sweetness and acidity. We’ve done our best to amplify the flavors of the fruits and this time we’ve chosen to bring back the combination of apricots and plums modeled after the hybrid fruit Pluot.
The beer pours with a reddish-pink haze and fluffy white head. Aromas of stone fruit explode from the glass. On the sip, tart acidity melds with the tart apricot stone fruit character and softer, rounder and fruitier plum. Altogether, it comes off like a fresh glass of ruby red grapefruit (it sounds odd, but we swear no grapefruits were used!). This beer would pair best with extra creamy soft ripened cheeses, a meal of fried or grilled fish, or best yet, pair this with a dessert of a warm chocolate brownie and fresh whipped cream. While this beer breaks away from what Idle Hands is known for, we appreciate the outlet to let ourselves think outside of the box . We hope the Kill Your Idles series provides something enjoyable to those that don’t always reach for a beer and it lets us say “we have something here for you too!” Come on in for draft pours and Freshies to take home! — Lead Brewer Brett Bauer
