New for Spring 2021 – It’s Joyous IPA!
Our new bright and juicy Hop Cycle seasonal is one of the first beers that was developed through our Scratch Lab.
For the past 12-13 years, we’ve experimented with ingredients, techniques and the “why” behind flavors on our 15-barrel Scratch system. If you’ve been to Tröegs, you’ve likely seen that system tucked into the corner of our Tasting Room.
Last year, we invested in a 3-barrel Braukon system that we call the Scratch Lab. The Scratch Lab is a much smaller system designed to replicate the temperature controls, pressure and geometry of our Scratch system and our production brewhouse.
“With the Scratch Lab, we can break up 15-barrel brews into nano batches,” says Brewing Manager Tim Mayhew. “That allows us to test things like dry-hop combinations and yeast strains side-by-side. We used to wait weeks between batches.”
And that was the case for the development of Joyous.
You could say that Joyous was reverse-engineered. It’s an IPA inspired not by hops, but by a yeast strain: Hothead Kveik. We love Hothead’s vibrant tropical profile, and we used a combination of Citra, Sabro and Azacca hops to harmonize with it.
We taste: tangelo, juicy papaya and subtle coconut.
Brewed with a mix of flaked oats and pilsner, pale, Munich, caramel and honey malts, Joyous clocks in at 6.5% ABV.
The label art was done by longtime Tröegs collaborator Lindsey Tweed. “I was inspired by the bright colors of the handprinted signs you see along the road in the tropics,” says Tweed. “The design of Joyous stands on its own, and it also sits really well alongside other Tröegs favorites like Perpetual and Haze Charmer.”
This bright and refreshing IPA is a sure sign that another joyous spring has sprung. It’s available from February through early April in 12-oz. bottles and cans, 1/2 kegs and 1/6 kegs wherever Troegs is sold.
