Brasserie du Flo
The Brasserie du Flo is a Belgian brewery of the Brotherhood of Saint-Antoine established in Blehen (Hannut) in the province of Liège.
History
Since Blehen is no longer an independent municipality, the communal house has had many different destinations: meeting room, exhibition hall, bar-refreshment bar or storage room for various materials. As his condition deteriorated little by little, it was decided to undertake its renovation. But what about?
Like other villages in the surrounding area, a village house was first thought of. This project, similar to so many others, lacked relief and did not reflect the dynamism and originality that characterizes the Blehinois. Moreover, a premise already satisfied all their needs in this matter.
It was therefore necessary to find an original destination for him.
At a party in Waremme, some monks discuss with a local artisan brewer. When a monk of Saint Anthony meets a brewer, what are they talking about? Beer, of course. And especially of artisan beer, as is the cuvée Saint Antoine … The old dream of the monks has always been to brew the Cuvée in the very heart of the village. Glass glass, the idea takes shape: and if we made beer at Blehen, the old House Communal? Transformed into a brewery, of course!
Especially since there was already a brewery in the 1600s. This original plan is submitted to the City of Hannut and to the Rural Renewal where from the start it arouses interest! The project is all the more interesting because it is original and it will finally be adopted with enthusiasm.
By realizing this brewery, the inhabitants wanted a project that goes beyond the village dimension, which is a project of Hannut and even of regional scope.
Investment costs will be borne by the City of Hannut and the Walloon Region in the framework of the Rural Renovation Project.
The principle chosen here will be a didactic and artisanal mini-brewery, a village house with an interactive vocation open to the many Hannutans interested in the art of brewing. Which means that, besides the production of beer (Cuvée or other), there is a goal of real information.
The production will follow the craft methods and it is likely that each brew will be a little different from the others! In order to ensure the necessary follow-up, a new committee of specialists has been formed in Blehen and is composed of the most enthusiastic admirers of the famous beverage!
The name of Brasserie du Flo originated in the locality just opposite the town hall. At this spot there was an expanse of water, the size of which varied according to the seasons and which was called ‘Le Flo’. And in winter the kids of Blehen took pleasure in sliding on this all-natural skating rink!
In addition to the 4 beer-making rooms, a multi-purpose room, located on the ground floor, serves as a reception, information and meeting place. Two smaller rooms can also be used upstairs, for meetings, conferences, entertainment, exhibitions, etc. This socio-collective use of places is also a way of allowing the inhabitants to adhere to the project.
