Brasserie La Barbiot is a Belgian artisan microbrewery to Ville-sur-Haine (Le Rœulx) in the province of Hainaut.

History

At age 49, Roger Barbiot is preparing to make the leap, he gradually abandon the vegetable crops to go into the beer! How did it happen? For love of hop hops, of course. But also and above all by the force of things.
The two hectares of land he works mainly on Ville-sur-Haine, Naast, Gottignies and Havré bring him less and less. It has grown essentially chicory, potato and leek, but nowadays profitability no longer follows.
“We are now switching to luxury consumption,” he explains.
“People want washed potatoes and they buy in very small quantities whereas before they grouped themselves among neighbors to make their provisions. In young households, it is everybody for himself and it is not even rare To see the woman buy one or two chicory, two or three carrots “.
It’s 17 years since Roger Barbiot lives on his vegetables. They allowed her to raise five children, Virginie, Stephanie, Laeticia, Myriam and Jonathan. They helped him to sell his goods by going door to door throughout the region and as far as Bray and Havré. He stopped three or four years ago and is now selling at home, live.
“We’ve never been hungry,” says his wife Marie-Line Degraeve, but I can tell you that it was a job.
For Roger still cultivates the old, especially the chicons.
“Mine are not pushed to the water, but when you count everything, you can not get over it, but I worked on two and a half hectares at one time.”
Originally from Thieu and farming parents, he had launched into the vegetable after being “unemployed” as he says.
Beer, as well as fruit wines, he began to touch there eight or nine years ago.
“I did tests in pots and pans, I did not do well at the beginning because I had no training, and then I got to know myself, I went to visit breweries and I even planted my own hops in Gottenijs Because I want to use only natural products as I still do in my crops. “
Its malt comes from Beloeil and it is equipped gradually. Handcrafted by tinkering a lot. A little to the images of Alain Broodcorens whose brewery we have previously presented to Erquelinnes.
He had contacts with him. On the other hand, he has not yet had the opportunity to visit the Brasserie Saint-Feuillien, nevertheless the closest of his home.
Today he is ready to go. By brass of 250 to 300 liters. Hygiene services have already passed inspection of its installation. He eagerly awaited the excises while setting up two old garages which will soon become a tasting room.
His labels are in preparation they will be drawn by the artist Freddy Poliart and will represent the lift of Strépy-Thieu.
Since it will be the name of his beer.
