August 23, 2018 Beau’s Brewing Co. is welcoming Oktoberfest season with the return of two of its popular German-style beer releases for fall 2018: Märzen, from the Farm Table Series, and Three Knocks Sticke Alt. Both releases will be widely available in Ontario and Québec beginning this week, sold in 600 ml bottles at craft beer retailers in those provinces as well as on tap at craft-friendly restaurants and pubs.
Märzen, which has been a returning seasonal for Beau’s now for more than a decade, is an orangey-amber 5.5% Oktoberfest lager. Munich malts contribute a satisfying bread and biscuit character, and German perle hops lend balancing bitterness; a super-clean lager finish completes the package. Since the recipe was first brewed in 2009, it has been recognized three times with awards at the National Organic Craft Beer Competition, in the lager/amber lager category.
Beau’s fall Wild Oats Series release is Three Knocks, a rare style of beer known as sticke alt. Altbier is an amber lagered ale, and the regional style of Dusseldorf in Germany. Seasonally, or sometimes just once a year, altbier breweries in Dusseldorf will covertly brew special, stronger batches of their alt, and share them only with family, friends and regular patrons. Beau’s toasts this historical tradition with Three Knocks, a strong, bold and oak-aged version of Beau’s award-winning altbier recipe.
Three Knocks (7% ABV, 55 IBUs) pours brilliant mahogany with a dense ecru foam. The aroma offers deep grainy malt notes complemented by a touch of herbal hops. The flavour notes feature deep, chewy malt and intense but balanced hop bitterness. The long finish offers resonances of crisp malts and spicy Perle hops, with a touch of woody tannin.
The targeted in-store date for these releases in Ontario and Québec is August 30. They will be around for a three-month engagement at craft beer retailers, and of course, direct from the Vankleek Hill brewery tap room. They will also be feature releases at Beau’s Oktoberfest (10th Edition) coming up September 21 and 22, 2018. Märzen will be a limited release in Alberta and B.C.; Manitoba will receive some Märzen as well as Three Knocks.
