May 24, 2018 Beau’s Brewing Co. is announcing a summer release of Hopfenlager, a hopped lager from the Farm Table Series. The easy-to-enjoy 6.6 % offering is exactly as it sounds: a hoppy take on a traditional clean and crisp German-style lager. For the lager-drinker who also likes a good hoppy ale, Hopfenlager is just the ticket.
Also known as an India Pale Lager, the hopfenlager is a relatively new hybrid-beer style which is at its heart a lager, but with a hop profile more characteristic of popular hoppy ales. The beer pours hazy yellow with a white foam, with noticeable hop bitterness sitting atop a crisp, long and herbaceous finish. And that lager finish actually sets the stage quite well for the hop varieties to shine. In Hopfenlager’s case, the brewing team at Beau’s selected organic Barbe Rouge and Mistral hops from the Alsace region of France. “Barbe Rouge hops provide a herbal and somewhat earthy character to the beer, while Mistral hops offer light notes of black peppery spice,” explains Beau’s brewmaster Matthew O’Hara.
Hopfenlager was first introduced last fall, as an exclusive beer for Beau’s Oktoberfest. It is part of the Beau’s Farm Table Series, which are approachable creations interpreting classic or emerging beer styles. It is best served in a Toscana glass at 4-6 C. The Beau’s kitchen team recommends pairing Hopfenlager with barbecue-grilled Debreziner sausage, and roasted asparagus with Cambozola cheese sauce.
Hopfenlager will be available in bottles and on tap in Ontario and Québec beginning in late May, and will also be available in bottles in Manitoba and New Brunswick early this summer. Bottles of Hopfenlager can be purchased directly from the brewery beginning Thursday May 31, either at the onsite tap room, or through BYBO.ca for home delivery in Ottawa. Bottles of Hopfenlager can also be purchased at LCBO.com for home delivery anywhere in Ontario.
