During the month of December, we are proud to support Ethos, a NE Portland based non-profit who’s missions is to build community through music.
Founded in 1998, Ethos provides group classes, private lessons, summer camps and music outreach programs to thousands of youth across Oregon. Ethos believes that all children deserve the academic and social benefits of music education, regardless of their socioeconomic status, geographic location, race, ethnicity, religious belief, country of origin, abilities or disabilities, gender identity or sexual orientation. They believe that music education has the power to create community and our differences should be valued, fostered and appreciated.
Ethos believes in creating inclusive programming, responsive to the communities that we serve. Ethos has been named one of the top 50 after school arts programs by the President’s Commission for the Arts and Humanities on 8 separate occasions.
Ethos provides music instruction through our three main programs:
- Music Lessons for Kids is Ethos’ in-house music education program – Classes are provided on a sliding scale based on student’s participation in the Free and Reduced Rate lunch program, a Federal standard indicator of poverty. Music Lessons for Kids also offers week long music summer camps for low-income kids.
- Music Across Oregon is Ethos’ rural outreach program – A partnership with the federal AmeriCorps program that places 10 full-time musicians to live and teach full-time in rural communities across Oregon; this program has served the towns of Maupin, Dufur, Monument, Falls City, Spray, Metolius, Madras, Elkton, Lakeview, Adel, Paisley, and Plush.
- Music Corps – An urban outreach program that offers innovative after-school music classes targeting under-served students. Course offerings include percussion, guitar, Hip-Hop, piano, voice, and marimba, to name a few.
We are are excited to support our NE Neighbor because of their commitment to improving the everyday lives of the children in our local community and beyond. Join us in raising a pint to Ethos! Cheers!
