February 3, Ghent – It has been quiet for 10 months in the Overpoortstraat in Ghent. Together with Filou, Belgian Regional Beer, the café owners of the popular student area presented a corona-safe toast to draw attention to their situation.
The campaign was an initiative of the Gentse Tappers, the non-profit association that unites the 35 catering businesses of the Overpoort. Our brewery maintains a close relationship with the non-profit organization, which is why we did not hesitate for a moment to support this action. We delivered a large Filou glass with a capacity of no less than 3 liters to every catering business. All the patrons filled the glass with a tea light, a sign of hope. Glass in hand, they sat down in front of the closed door of their catering business.
The action came after the publication of the results of a survey by the Ghent Tappers in collaboration with Unizo East Flanders. In this survey, half of the entrepreneurs indicated that they would be bankrupt within 4 months if the current situation does not change.
“The doors of the popular student cafes have been closed for 10 months. These entrepreneurs have not had any prospects for 10 months and that is taking its toll. This is a ticking time bomb ”, it sounds at Unizo.
Fortunately, there is also a ray of hope: 45.6% of the catering industry owners say they still feel mentally resilient. The glass is empty, but there is still hope!
Filou again calls on social media to continue to support the hospitality industry. Our Belgian Regional Beer does this on the basis of a profile frame that anyone can add on Facebook. For example, we want to fill the glass step by step until the catering industry can open again!
The campaign to support the Ghent Overpoort with personalized tins of Castle Rouge is also still running.
