Golden Lager triumphs at the World Beer Cup

They call it the “Olympics of Beer”—and Golden Lager made it to the podium.

On May 3 during a ceremony at the Music City Center in Nashville, Tenn., the Brewers Association announced the winners of the World Beer Cup, its prestigious biennial (that’s every two years) beer competition that regularly draws thousands of brewers eager to pit their beers against others in a stylistic taste-off. This year, a panel of 295 invited judges from 33 countries tasted and evaluated 8,234 entries from 2,515 breweries across the globe, eventually naming the top three beers in 101 style categories.

Golden Lager—which we added to our year-round lineup in January—earned a bronze award in the “Other International-Style Lager” category, a group with 81 total entries. (The beer, if you were wondering, is brewed to mimic a classic Munich helles, a lovely German beer style whose description you can find here.) With the win, Golden Lager earned Four Peaks its thirteenth World Beer Cup award and joined the ranks of Sunbru (which won gold 2012), Hop Knot (also gold, also 2012) and Kilt Lifter (a gold-winner in 2016).

“Golden Lager is a beer that’s been a long time coming for us,” says Four Peaks brewmaster and co-founder Andy Ingram. “We didn’t want to put this beer out into the world until we felt like we could get it exactly right, and to have it recognized by the Brewers Association and the World Beer Cup judges among all the great beers entered validates all the work we put into creating it. I’m so proud of the Four Peaks team.”

Three other Arizona breweries also won big at WBC: O.H.S.O. Brewery, which took home bronze in the “American-style amber lager” category with its 89Ale; Saddle Mountain Brewing Co., which won silver in the “Scottish-style ale” category with Taildragger Clan-Destine; and McFate Brewing Co., which won gold in the “chili beer” category with Hatch Chile Gatos.

Golden Lager is available on draft as well as in 12-ounce bottles and 16-ounce cans. Find some near you using our Beer Finder and see why it earned that award for yourself.
