Meet the curator of our first ever Craft Beer Crate – Tiffany Hayes, better known in the Craft Beer community as the founder of The Travelling Pint. Tiffany is a beer connoisseur and helped us pick an assortment of beers that she knows you will love from some of her favourite Ontario breweries. Learn more about Tiffany and why she chose the beers, along with her favourite snacks to pair with them.
About Tiffany AKA The Travelling PintTiffany Hayes is a beer connoisseur and founder of The Travelling Pint beer blog. She is pictured with Steam Whistle’s new Craft Beer Crate. Tiffany curated the beer selection for the inaugural offering.Tell us a bit about yourself; what got you into beer? Since a kid, I have always been a dreamer and always believed in finding a way to live in a way where you can not really tell the difference between when you’re working and when you’re playing. Right out of high school, in 1998, I departed to travel Asia for a year. I fell in love with adventure, travel and meeting new people. The travel bug struck and has stuck ever since. Enter beer…I have ALWAYS been a beer drinker, and once I started to travel to more well-known beer destinations, my thirst for knowledge also started to grow. This is where I fell in love with learning again and wanted to know everything. How beer is made, what ingredient brings what flavour, the history of breweries, why it pairs well with some things more than others, what equipment does what, best marketing practices and the culture of beer around the world. I could go on, but the more I learned, the more I loved beer., I was hooked. Once you add my love of travel and beer to the fact that I have been running my own businesses since I was 25, it was time to create a business around my ultimate passions; people, travel & beer.
What is the Travelling Pint? What’s the goal of it? Who are your followers? The Travelling Pint is a Craft Beer & Travel blog created in the Fall of 2015. It is about the people, places and stories that make our craft beer world so great. The blog is centered around my thirst for knowledge about beer, brewing, the industry, and communities from around the globe.
The Travelling Pint is for everyone interested in travel and the world’s greatest beverage – beer. Whether you are just discovering beer and drink one style or are a seasoned homebrewer and true beer geek, Travelling Pint is for you!
If you were not a beer superstar, what else would you be doing? I love creating physical things and have a creative side. I would open an Etsy shop with all my creations and focus on that passion more. That. or I would learn more about becoming a horror special effects monster creator – I love horror movies and monsters!
The winter season is here. What are your favourite beers to drink during the colder months? My fridge goes darker with toasty stouts, brown ales, slow sippers, and winter releases. Though, it is key to keep a few stocked in there that keep me dreaming of warm summer days.
Where do you enjoy drinking beer the most? Anywhere with a view, I can get lost in, preferable by water. A bar stool at apub would be a close second as that is where the best conversation happens. This is the best way to discover what to see, do and drink when travelling!
About the Craft Beer CrateThe inaugural Craft Beer Crate contains a selection of awesome Ontario Craft Beers, all hand selected by Tiffany Hayes.What inspiration did you have while curating the Craft Beer Crate? I pictured it as a stocked beer fridge I would have in my living room, full of beers I would drink any day, on any occasion with no fear of saying, “Oh, I only have this one left.” I was inspired by the saying, “Good to the last drop” I also tied in some choices to great memories of visits to specific breweries or a place or time that I drank one particular beer. I am a strong believer that memories make things taste even better.
You obviously curated this pack but are there any beers you are most excited about?Night Shift Coffee Porter by Red Circle is a beer I would drink anytime, any place, any day. It is a true favourite that I am happy to have added here. I am also excited to share more about FLUX Brewing with everyone as they are a newer addition to my neck of the woods and are brewing great things. Lastly, the Winter Blonde intrigues me by Henderson Brewing as I have not had that one yet.
What kind of glassware are you using?ALL the glassware! I have far too much glassware, but I will rotate through most shapes and sizes with this wide selection of beers. I plan to enjoy quite a few of these while I am outside, so I will most likely be using my shatterproof “glassware” from Fermented Reality. I highly suggest pouring the majority of these into glassware to enjoy the brew’s overall appearance and aroma.
What do you consider when developing a Craft Crate? I think a Pilsner, ‘Helles, or Blonde type beer should always be included as a base. Those styles are a good judge of a brewery’s character and quality, as they are hard to mask off-flavours in. If the beer is done well, , then you know the brewery is doing something right. I tried to hit a couple of other styles and, of course, showcase your flagship Pilsner. Overall, I want to try to please each end of the beer ‘lover’s spectrum with a good variety. With that being said, if ‘ ‘it’s beer, it will get drank.
Are there any other beers you would have liked to include in the crate?Yes, always! Little Beasts out of Durham Region, but we had to stick to cans for ease of packaging in the crate. Third Moon, as I have yet to try it (I know, it is shocking).
About Food and BeerOne of the Steam Whistle Biergarten specialties is their fresh-baked, Bavarian-style Pretzel, included to pair with the Craft Beer Crate offerings.What are your favourite beer snacks?I have this weird obsession with cupcakes and beer. Gourmet cupcakes come in millions of flavours these days and are fun to complement or contrast your beer. As a more everyday food, I love beer and cheeses, stinky ones, and wings and beer seem to make life better. With that being said, the pretzel is a fantastic addition to the crate and a go-to pairing as well. I seem to have so many memories tied to soft pretzels, whether at events, town fairs, vacations or my mom baking them as a kid. It may seem plain to some but take a minute to really taste it on its own, and with your chosen beer and see how much it makes a tasty difference.
What beer(s) are you reserving to pair with the pretzel?Steam Whistle Pilsner or Walkerville Brewery’s Purity Pilsner as they compliment the bread flavour and enhance some of that salty deliciousness. Also, Flux Brewing’s Session Ale adds a little more flavour to the pairing without overshadowing the pretzel and cheese!
