Many visitors to the Newburyport Brewing tasting room often ask our staff what other cool stuff they should do during their visit to our City. The short answer is that there are lots of different activities to take on depending on the season. From cozy bars to secluded walking trails there are many family-friendly things to do in our City during this time of year. In this post, we’ll focus on some fun things to do here in Newburyport, MA specifically during the winter. Most of these are indoors, but Newburyport has hiking trails, beaches, and parks to explore, too – we’ll discuss those in an upcoming blog post this spring.
If you’re looking for somewhere to warm up by the fireplace and enjoy a Newburyport brew, grab a seat near the fireplace at long-time Newburyport stalworts Black Cow, The Grog, The Port Tavern, or Andiamo. Michael’s Harborside offers a huge menu and great views of the Merrimack River. Take a walk through Market Square and up State Street to check out the Federal-style brick buildings – this area’s row of cozy bars and restaurants including the Thirsty Whale and the Paddle Inn are conveniently located steps from the City’s central parking lot. Anchor Stone Deck Pizza offers up hot slices and just around the corner, pony up to the bar at Oregano for a fresh Italian dish. Keep on walking to Mission Oak Grill if perfectly grilled filet mignons are on your list.
Newburyport, MA is rich with history. Want to learn more about Newburyport’s shipbuilding past, or how the clipper ships constructed here played a huge role in international exploration and trade? The Custom House Maritime Museum should definitely be on your list. Located within a classical revival building and opened as a museum in 1975 during Newburyport’s redevelopment, this 1835 stone structure is one of Newburyport’s architectural highlights. The Museum and is packed with interesting displays, clipper ship models, shipwreck and salvage collections, and ship building exhibits. Get a close look at Newburyport’s maritime heritage and the role it played in early New England. Newburyport is the birthplace of the U.S. Coast Guard and home to some of the first clipper ships ever built.
If the performing arts are your thing, than look no further than the Firehouse Center for the Arts. This 191-seat theater is active throughout the year with events, partner presentations, and arts education programs. Located adjacent to Newburyport’s Market Square Historic District, the Firehouse Center for the Arts is just one of the many things to do in Newburyport, MA during the winter.
Looking for a place to go sledding, cross-country skiing, or snowshoeing in Newburyport, MA? Be sure to check out Maudslay State Park. During the winter, you won’t be able to enjoy the 19th century gardens and plantings that this Park has to offer, but the snow-filled rolling meadows, towering pines, and long-glide sledding hill will certainly give you opportunities to sled/ski/snowshoe. There’s plenty of parking in the lot across the street from the Park’s main entrance. Also, check out Parker River Clean Water Association’s Little River Trail System. The trails feature rich wildlife habitats within an urban setting. Hike or ski this relatively flat terrain through meadows, forests, vernal pools and wetlands – there are two entrances along Hale Street in Newburyport.
