January 29, 2018 Great Divide’s New Barrel Series Release: Wood Werks We’re excited to release our new lineup of limited edition barrel aged and sour beers, Wood Werks. Kicking the series off in style is a Belgian-style sour. Keep reading to learn about the history of our barrel aging program, the new series, and more about our tasty first edition.
The History
Great Divide began barrel aging beers around 2004 with very small releases in our original taproom. At this point, nearly all of the barrels were coming from our friends at Stranahan’s Whiskey. In 2008 we decided to grow the program to three package releases a year with Barrel Aged Yeti, Barrel Aged Old Ruffian, and Barrel Aged Hibernation. All three of these beers were released as part of our original barrel aging program until last year, which culminated with the release of the Barrel Aged Classics gift pack last spring. As we approached the 10th anniversary of our original Barrel Aged Series, we felt like it was time to breathe some new life into the program and take a more modern approach to barrel aged beers. From here, our new Wood Werks series was born.
The New Series
With the brewery’s Brighton expansion, we were able to invest in two temperature and humidity controlled barrel aging rooms, which allow for greater control over the barrel aging process. This control has allowed us to build up a new world-class barrel aging program and create more diversity within our lineup. In the past, all of our barrel aged releases were aged in whiskey barrels. With this new series, we’re excited to mix it up a bit with some different styles of barrel aged beer including sours. Each year will feature brand new recipes and styles, each unique and different from the last.
No. 1: Belgian-Style Sour Aged in Red Wine Barrels on Plums The first Wood Werks release is a Belgian-style tripel artfully soured for 15 months in red wine barrels and aged on plums. This extremely limited spiced sour ale is 9.3 percent ABV and has notes of luscious stone fruit with a tart, dry finish and hint of French oak. Wood Werks Belgian-Style Sour will be available seasonally from February through March in 12oz bottles and on draft. We first brewed this beer 4-5 years ago and thought it was amazing so we knew it would be the perfect beer to kick off our new series. With its beautiful pink hue, it is a labor of love and patience.
This first release will be followed by a Flemish Sour Brown Ale in May, and a Barrel Aged Brown Rye Ale in August. And for all you Yeti fanatics out there, don’t worry, Barrel Aged Yeti will be released again at the end of the year.
