Best places to buy hops online

  • John Horn

In modern brewing, hops are king! Therefore, knowing where to get the highest quality hops is of the utmost importance. Take a look at the top online stores for ordering hops. Get the freshest, most quality and cheapest hops!

Yakima Chief HopsYakima Chief Hops describes itself as “a 100% grower-owned network of family hops farms”. They offer the unique opportunity to purchase hops directly from them via their online store.

I’m personally in favor of buying directly from the folks involved with growing and processing my hops. But that is a personal preference not a moral right and wrong kinda thing.

Yakima Chief’s offers some of the latest trendy hops. Azacca, Mosaic, and Sabro, are a few. But they also grow and sell classics like Centennial, Cascade, and Chinook.

Yakima Chief Hops is the sole producer of Cryo Hops®. You can choose to purchase many of their varieties in Cryo or T-90 Pellet form.

Hops DirectThis is another great way to buy (as their name says) directly from the farmers. Not only do the growers benefit more, Hops Direct offers some seriously competitive pricing.

I threw a pound of Amarillo® in my cart for $8.45! That’s 16 ounces baby! Oh, and their shipping was very reasonable. All said and done the total was $21.30. Nothing against MoreBeer but their Amarillo® was more than Hops Direct before shipping costs.

These guys only sell in 8oz, 1, 5, 11, and 44 pound packs. But last time I checked, most of us are using 8 oz of hops as a dry hop addition in a 5 gallon batch so buying more hops for less is a good thing.

Their prices are great and they also offer a HUGE variety of hops, from Amarillo® to Zappa®. They also have a lot of amazing varietal imports from New Zealand. Shopping through Hops Direct is like an online trip to paradise for any hop- head homebrewer.

Hops are available in whole leaf and pellet forms.

Yakima Valley HopsThese guys offer the most extensive options in terms of variety that I’ve seen anywhere. You can also choose from several different countries of origin. Hop terroir is real and Yakima Valley Hops gives you the chance to try hops from countries like France and South Africa.

Speaking of South Africa, I’d love to try their Southern Passion hops. Passion fruit all over the place.

Yakima Valley Hops now has what looks to be the same idea as Cryo Hops® It’s called LUPOMAX™. If you’re looking to up the hop aroma and flavor without all the vegital stuff, those are what you should use.

One thing that makes Yakima Valley Hops stand out is their effort to help brewers understand hop flavor. Each hop variety includes a simple description of what you can expect. That’s not really anything new or special but they’re using standardized graphics that are also used in the Barth-Haas Hop Aroma Standards Kit. Check it out and grow your vocabulary.

Farmhouse Brewing SupplySelf described as, “A small homebrew shop that specializes in semi-bulk hops (4/oz)”. They also offer all the other ingredients and equipment you need to brew. This kind of one-stop-shop inevitably comes in handy.

Their web design could be seen as a drawback but I prefer to let it remind me of when the internet was a kind and helpful place full of great information and not some wise-crack’s opinion.

Buy in bulk (orders of 2 or more) and start saving. The more you buy the more you save. Nevermind the fact that you’d actually have saved your money by not purchasing in the first place. If you’re like me, you’re going to buy lots of hops at some point. May as well save when you do.

Right now they’ve got 2019 Ekuanot at $13.99 for a pound. Throw in 8 bucks for shipping and it’s a great deal. Order more and split them between your other homebrewing club members and you’ll really benefit from the savings! The more you order the bigger percentage of a discount they give.

Atlantic Brew SupplyAnother one-stop-shop. They have a local homebrew supply store feel because for those living in North Carolina that’s exactly what they are.

Pricing is what you’d expect these days. You’re looking at the mid $20s for a pound of hops. The advantage here is for those living on the east coast. And if you need more than hops (and you do) you’ll be able to pick up your grain etc.

MoreBeer!MoreBeer! is probably one of the biggest suppliers of homebrewing equipment and ingredients…period. It comes as no surprise that they offer great shipping rates on orders over $59. And when I say “great”, I mean free shipping.

I personally like MoreBeer! if I’m ordering more than just hops. If it’s just hops I’d go with Hops Direct.

If you’re the kind of guy or gal that sits down and designs a recipe and then orders exactly what you need for that recipe, I highly recommend this online service.
