Brewer’s Spotlight: Change Up 13 – Ales for ALS

It’s been a bit since we’ve talked beer.  Don’t worry, it certainly doesn’t mean we haven’t been hard at work in the mean time brewing fresh batches of beer and keeping the tanks filled.  Now that we’re all back with our game faces on to close out the summer, I wanted to shed our spotlight on a new Change Up IPA that we’ll be tapping into this week.  We feel honored that we were able to lend our talents and tank space to the Ales for ALS program.  Since 2013, Ales for ALS has worked with Yakima Chief-Hopunion hop supplier (YHC Hops) to create custom blends of hops for each year of fundraising.  The hops are free of charge and in exchange, we’ll be donating $1 from every pint sold to the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI).

We took all we’ve learned from pervious Change Up batches to design a recipe that would showcase what this year’s blend had to offer as a flavorful and aromatic New England-style IPA.  The body is beefed up and well rounded by a hearty addition of flaked oats and a touch of background sweetness provided by Caramel 20L malt.  This years Ales for ALS hop blend includes Simcoe, Eukuanot, and Loral, along with new experimental varietals HBC 344, 438, 520, and 630.

Altogether, the beer presents with a tropical focused aroma featuring papaya, banana, tangerine, and a touch of cedar.  The flavor is soft and rounded with notes of apple, lemon-lime, underripe peach, and green pepper.  I’d recommend pairing this with herbed goat cheese spread on mini toasts or meaty chopped liver pates.  For an entree, serve this with cider glazed grilled pork chops and an arugula salad topped with shaved parmesan and dressed with a light drizzle of olive oil and lemon juice.

We’ll be premiering this beer along side our canning run of fresh Four Seam and the return of Kill Your Idles: Red Berry.  We hope you enjoy our interpretation of this wonderful and beneficial project in the fight to cure ALS.  Keep an eye out for other breweries in the area taking part, including Cambridge Brewing Company, Tributary, and Bissell Brothers of the few I can name off the top of my head.  Visit a4a.als.netfor more information and to find a brewery participating near you.  Join us in raising a glass and drinking up to a good cause!  Cheers! — Lead Brewer Brett Bauer
