Help us “pitch in” for Arizona’s veterans

The Veterans Reflection Garden in Mesa is exactly what it sounds like: a safe, social space for veterans to reflect and, if need be, heal. Sounds like a beneficial place, right? Just one problem: It doesn’t exist yet. We want your help to change that.

A project of the Mesa Leadership Program Class of 2018, the Veterans Reflection Garden is a proposed space that’ll be located adjacent to the Mesa Veterans Resource Center at 165 N. Centennial Way in Mesa. It will be modeled as a healing garden designed for mindfulness and relaxation. Studies have shown such spaces can reduce the anger, anxiety and pain of those who spend time in them, and they work quickly—just three to five minutes spent in one can begin to lower blood pressure and muscle tension. The garden will also provide a space for veterans groups to gather, host events and increase public awareness of veterans’ issues.

When we heard the garden was in need of funds, we knew we had to help. So we’re “pitching in” the best way we know how: By selling beer. From January 19 to February 19, we’re donating $1 from every pint of Pitchfork Pale Ale sold at bars across the Valley—up to a maximum of $5,000—to the project.

“Supporting our veterans through the creation of this garden was a no-brainer for us,” says Four Peaks founder and head brewer Andy Ingram, whose father served in the U.S. Air Force. “Whether they’re friends or family, everyone knows a veteran who deserves a space like this in which they can relax.”

The program will culminate in a happy hour celebration at our 8th Street brewpub at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19—President’s Day—at which we’ll be hosting the men and women who’ve donated their time and skills to help construct the reflection garden. (Anyone else who wants to attend and shake these fine folks’ hands will obviously be welcome, too.)
