Margriet looks to the future with confidence!

From now on, Margriet will grace the roof-top terrace of Bar BAPTIST.
Elegantly perched on its edge, with her sights on the future and a glass of Augustijn in her hand, Margriet wishes you a warm welcome on top of the beating heart of the brewery.

The unveiling of this likeness of Margriet Schelfaut is the figurative keystone of the recent renovations.

Choosing Margriet for this honour and immortalizing her in this way was not a coincidence. Margriet Schelfaut was the wife of Paul van Steenberge, who took over the brewery after the First World War. Margriet had inherited the brewery from her father Jozef. Thanks to Margriet, the brewery did not join a cooperative during the Second World War, in spite of the insistence of her husband. For her, joining up was the same as selling out. Because of Margriet’s resolve, Brouwerij Van Steenberge is still, to this day, charting its own independent course.
Margriet Schelfaut is the symbol of ‘all’ the women who have played such exceptionally important roles throughout the rich history of the brewery.

Artist Veerle De Vos has memorialised this open, inspiring and visionary woman in her own arresting style. Veerle places people and life itself at the core of all her work. With this bronze likeness of Margriet Schelfaut, she immortalizes an iconic woman and an equally iconic beer.

Cheers to Margriet and to life!
