What is nitro beer?

Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck is shaking up the beer world. And you can take that literally. The family brewery from Izegem is launching two Nitro Infused specialty beers: Kasteel Nitro Noir and Kasteel Nitro Blond. But what exactly is nitro beer?

Beer with nitrogen

Nitro comes from the English word “nitrogen”, which means nitrogen. A brewer usually uses carbon dioxide for brewing beer. Depending on the type of beer, the carbon dioxide content is low or high
In a nitro beer, however, the brewer replaces the carbon dioxide with nitrogen. You will notice the difference immediately when serving! This way you don’t have to tilt the glass, as you usually do with a beer with CO2.

The addition of nitrogen causes the beer to burst into the glass and dance its way to the top. Once there, a firm glass-adhesive foam head forms.

Benefits of nitrogen
• The nitrogen creates a thick head of foam.
• A nitro beer offers a silky soft mouthfeel, is creamy and full of flavor.
• The specialty beer is less heavy, the beer is more digestible.

Canned beer

The Nitro Infused specialty beers from Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck are available in cans. The choice for canned beer is deliberate, because:

• Light and oxygen have no influence on the taste of canned beer.
• A can of beer cools up to 6 times faster in the fridge than a bottle of beer.
• Cans of beer are easy to stack and weigh less than a glass beer bottle.
• One transport can deliver up to 48% more canned beer than bottled beer.
• An aluminum can is fully recyclable.
• No hassle with empties, once empty you can put a can into the PMD bag.
• A recycled can of beer is on the store shelves after an average of 60 days.

“The ritual of shaking three times and pouring it vertically turns every beer into an experience, a party, as it were.

Each can receives a shot of nitrogen during filling. Only then is the beer Nitro Infused. But how do you activate the nitrogen?

• Shake the can three times. Don’t shake too briskly, just shake gently.
• After shaking, the nitrogen is activated.
• Open the can carefully and turn it over.
• Pour the beer in one smooth movement.

“The ritual of shaking three times and pouring it vertically turns every beer into an experience, a party, as it were”, says Belgian beer sommelier Ben Vinken.

The beer sommelier is also lyrical about the taste experience: “The nitro process in the can ensures a great upgrade of every beer. The foam is beautiful, thick and sticky to the wall, the beer has a greater fullness and creaminess, it is also more digestible and accessible. It’s like tasting draft beer. ”
