Hopworks Urban Brewery is an American brewery from Portland, Oregon.

Uopworks Urban Brewery creates world-class beer and food using business practices that improve our environment and inspire our community.

With locally-sourced, organic and Salmon Safe hops, our 20-barrel brewery produces 13,500 barrels of beer a year for our two brewpubs and for distribution throughout the Northwest. Our pubs serve our beer and fresh food, in sustainably-built and operated buildings that have a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.

Hopworks is family-owned and operated, employing over 130 people in the Pacific Northwest. We serve our neighborhoods through donations, profit sharing and volunteering with local, non-profit organizations. From composting to salvaged materials, and from pervious pavers to hand dryers, we have made every effort to protect our future with thoughtful alternatives. We are the first Certified B Corporation brewery in the Pacific Northwest and our campus is the first Salmon-Safe Certified brewery in the world.

History

2004
The Ettingers purchased the building that now houses our Powell location. Built in 1948, the structure was originally a showroom for bulldozers. Sunset Fuel Company inhabited the building from 1963 until Hopworks purchased it in 2004. Keeping in mind that remodelling existing buildings is a strong environmentally friendly practice, the building was carefully deconstructed by Lovett Construction and rebuilt using as many reclaimed materials as possible. The brewery and pub were designed with green-building principles in mind, utilizing the most efficient energy-saving equipment and materials affordable with ample bike parking.

2007
Hopworks Urban Brewery was officially founded and we brewed our first batch of beer, Organic Hopworks IPA. The adjacent brewpub opened its doors in 2008 and has served local food and sustainable beer ever since. We opened with 48 employees and brewed about 3,500 barrels of beer in our initial year.

2011
Hopworks expanded into North Portland with Hopworks BikeBar, our second brewpub. Located on N. Williams Blvd.—one of Portland’s most travelled bike routes—BikeBar is a super-efficient energy property designed to meet the Net Zero energy building standard.

2012
In the summer we began canning our beer in an effort to reduce fuel consumption during transportation and to protect the quality of our beer.

In December, the Oregon Sustainability Board presented HUB with the Governor’s Oregon Sustainability Grand Champion Award. The Award promotes and advances the inclusion of sustainable practices in government and the private sector.

2015 AND BEYOND
It has been a monumental year for Hopworks as we chart a course for our future and commit to invest in our three core values—quality, the environment, and our community.

This year we earned our certification as the first B Corporation brewery in the Pacific Northwest and we became the first Salmon-Safe Certified brewery in the world. We expanded our brewery’s capacity, installed a custom Cleaning In Place skid to conserve water and expanded our core portfolio to include Totally Radler, Nonstop Hef Hop, and HUB Hard Cider in 16 oz. cans.
